At times, news coverage of religious, spiritual and ethical issues in New Zealand has lacked diversity, misrepresented people of faith, and disproportionately platformed the more extreme voices at the fringes of their communities.
For the most part, this is down to a lack of expertise rather than bias. At one time, a ‘religion desk’ might have been a mainstay of newsrooms, but these days limited resources and the ever-increasing pace of news media mean journalists are sometimes thrown into stories and communities they know little about.
Instead of decrying poor portrayals in our media, we asked ourselves how we could help.
Put simply, xvox exists to inform and enhance reporting on religion, spirituality and ethics by linking news media professionals with thoughtful experts, high-quality content and helpful resources.
